Region Upper Bavaria
Region Upper Bavaria
One of the most popular holiday regions in Germany

Upper Bavaria lies in the southeast of Bavaria and borders in the south and east Austria, in the north-east Lower Bavaria and Upper Palatinate, in the northwest Central Franconia and in the west Swabia. Most important rivers in the region are the Danube, Altmühl, Lech, Isar, Inn and Salzach.

There are four landscapes in Upper Bavaria:

  • In the south prevails the Alps with Germany’s highest mountain, Zugspitze (2962 metres).
  • The foothills of the Alps have numerous lakes: Lake Ammer, Lake Starnberg and Lake Walchen are just a few examples. Bavaria’s biggest lake is Lake Chiem while Bavaria‘s and Germany’s deepest lake is Lake König.
  • The Plateau slopes gently towards river Danube.
  • In the north some of the Frankish Alb and Altmühl valley are within the boundaries of Upper Bavaria.

Upper Bavaria is of one of the most popular holiday regions in Germany. This is no surprise, because it offers both in summer and winter wonderful opportunities for excursions and different activities during holidays. In winter time skiing, cross-country skiing, skating, snow shoe hiking or a ride in a carriage through snow covered woods are among favoured activities.

In summer times swimming in lakes or pools, surfing, climbing, hiking and sightseeing are popular activities. Churches, castles, fortresses, a walk through Old Towns or visiting a museum makes time fly by. To recover from so many activities, wellness hotels and nice small boarding houses are willing to serve you best. Upper Bavaria is also gastronomically fantastic.
