Rhineland-Palatinate / Naheland / Bad SobernheimExperience history closely
If you wonder how people did live and make ends meet during the last five centuries in different parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Open Air Museum in Bad Sobernheim is where you should turn to!
Since 1970 historical houses and buildings stemming from different regions of this federal state are moved and rebuild minutely stone for stone in the beautiful “Nightingale Valley” very near Bad Sobernheim.
Since then, four museum villages comprising 40 buildings and representing the regions Palatinate-Rheinhessen, Middle Rhine-Westerwald, Hunsrück-Nahe and Moselle-Eifel have emerged. Not only these houses, grouped picturesquely around fields, gardens and orchards, also a multitude of exhibitions inside the buildings are of interest.
Be it an old butcher shop, a hairdresser or be it collections of old toys or tools, be it old agriculture machinery or a village bakery – everybody will find something which appeals to him or arouse his curiosity. Senior citizens are more or less sure to experience a bout of nostalgia being once more confronted with the eager pace with which life is passing by and taking away a lot of beautiful, old things.
On the other hand also children and teens will find it interesting to see how people did live some fifty years ago – not to speak of very old times…
If the round trip from museum village to museum village which leads up some steep slopes has tired you you can recover at a small inn presenting local and tasty food. We also advise you to pay a visit to the museum shop – especially if you should be a fan of old tin toys!
From March to November daily except Mondays from 09:00 – 18:00. Last reception at 17:00 h.
In June, July and August, during school holidays and during national holidays the museum is also open Mondays.
