An excursion to the cathedral town at river Saale

The cathedral of Naumburg is one of the most important historical buildings in the town. Built in early 13th century the cathedral belonged to the diocese Naumburg and is today the Protestant cathedral „St. Peter and Paul“. Yearly over 150,000 visitors come to the cathedral, in particular to admire the sculpture of Uta von Ballenstedt. It is one of twelve sculptures made by an unknown sculptor who lived during the 13th century and is called „master of Naumburg“. These twelve sculptures are among the most important German sculptures of the Middle Ages.

In honour of this Uta, each year between the 14th and 16th of March Naumburg stages an „Utas‘ meeting“ that attracts women of the name "Uta" even from beyond Germany’s borders.

Culture, hiking, cycling and water sports, Naumburg has some activity for everybody.

The region of Saale-Unstrut with the cathedral of Naumburg and other monuments of international importance has been nominated for the admission to UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. The cultural surrounding of Saale and Unstrut is unique in meaning for understanding the European late Middle Ages.

The surroundings of Naumburg also offer many exciting places for hiking, bycicling and water sports. Everybody in adventurous mood can test his/her limits at climbing park Saale-Unstrut in Naumburg. Relaxing or swimming you can at aqualand "bad bulabana" which has wonderful sauna facilities. Sole thermal bath Bad Kösen is also recommended.
