The Hanseatic town of Stendal is an important traffic junction in the Altmark.

Stendal is a town rich in tradition with 40,000 inhabitants. Throughout the year it offers many cultural events. Cultural centre is the Theatre of Altmark – not only for Stendal, but for the whole region. The children theatre offers a special variety with plays and guest performances as for example a music and dance theatre.

At the town‘s lake is the “art place” where entertainment is focusing on young persons. Besides, around 100 events are yearly staged by music forum of Katharine church. The palette ranges from chamber and symphony concerts through choral and soloist’s performances to rock, pop and cabaret events.

A comprehensive collection of exhibits of Stendal’s and Altmark’s cultural history is shown in the Museum of Altmark. The land fire brigade museum shows the history of the fire brigade, starting at the use of a leather bucket until the invention of modern fire engines.

Churches, the city hall with the Roland statue as well as the town library that is situated in the refectory of the former Franciscan Monastery are all worth seeing.
