Merzig
Merzig´s main attraction is its "Wolf Park"

From river Saar‘s shores up to the nearby slopes and side valleys extends the town Merzig. In the town, not only 30,000 people but also the so-called "Viez", Saarland’s apple wine, are at home. The fact that France and Luxembourg are very close by can be felt in many forms.

Architecture from eight centuries can be seen in Merzig. There is for instance one of the most important Romanesque churches of Saarland, church Saint Peter. This three naved basilica was built from 1190 to 1230. To the church belong a baroque parsonage and the Gothic „plague cross“ dating back to the 14th century.

On a city tour you can see baroque constructions as the Halfenhaus, a former harbour bar, the Staadt-Marxsch town house, the Hillbring castle or abbey court Besseringen. Houses in Trier Street are in Jugendstil style as is the former jam factory. The historical town house was built in midst 17th century and is a six story building with two big corner pileworks. Originally it was built as hunting seat for Trier‘s archbishop.

Attractive surroundings of the city offer hiking and bicycling trails as well as attractive destinations like the unique wolf park in the Kammerforst forest. There are still living around 20 wolves. A harbour festival is staged annually, a quite big event with a dragon boat cup that is definitely worthwhile visiting.
