Health resort with wonderful wine

The city of Bernkastel-Kues has approx. 6,700 inhabitants and is situated in the administrative district of Bernkastel Wittlich, which lies in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Being centred in the Moselle valley in app. 50 km distance to the city of Trier, Bernkastel-Kues is an accredited Heilbad, a therapeutic health resort, and is on an area wide basis one of the biggest towns of the Middle Moselle. Bernkastel-Kues has four districts: Bernkastel and Andel on the right and Wehlen and Kues on the left Moselle shore. Mount Olympus is with a height of 415 m above NN the highest mountain of the region.

Wine and romantic Old Quarter

Placed in the middle of picturesque vineyards, the lovely town with its twisted alleys and lovingly restored half-timbered houses lies directly on the Moselle’s shores. The old market square is surrounded by a renaissance city hall and the town’s landmark, a small top house built in 1406, puts you back in medieval times. At the centre of the market square is “The Michael's Fountain” with its famous statue of Saint Michael.

Additionally, recommended for visiting are the Saint Michaels church at the foot of the district Bernkastel, the last preserved town gate „The Graacher gate“, the birth place of Nicholas Cusanus, who is one of the best known philosophers and scientists of the 14th century and, the last but not least the ruined castle Landshut which thrones far above the town.

The famous “Moselle Wine”

Lots of places to stop off invite you to enjoy a comfortable atmosphere and architecture of the old town. There you can enjoy a glass of Moselle wine and taste some of the regional or international dishes.

Bernkastel-Kues, with its many small shops all being situated in front of wonderful scenery, gives you not only the opportunity to shop but offers also a great variety of sport and leisure activities. Surrounded by the low mountain ranges of Hunsrück and Eifel, the town hosts several events as i.e. “The Spectacle of the Middle Ages”, “The Horsemen Days” and a summer stage with live concerts.

Historically the most important branch of industry is viniculture.

County of Bernkastel-Wittlich

The administrative district of Bernkastel-Wittlich has around 111,300 inhabitants and lies in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Comprising 107 municipalities, it is the second largest county of the federal state regarding square metres. Located on both banks of the Moselle, the countryside rises in the north to the Eifel and in the south the Hunsrück. The highest peak of the county and federal state is Erbeskopf (816 m). Seat of administration is the city of Wittlich.

Thanks to its manifold countryside Bernkastel-Wittlich has a lot to offer. The Eifel region is old millions of years and characterized by a rural idyll that once evolved from volcanoe grown nature. The Hunsrück’s original nature is rich in meadow and woods, and has with its broad river valleys one of the best air qualities in Germany. Additionally, lovely Moselle enchanting with its charming riverside area, is one of the biggest vineyard areas of the world.

The economic structure of the county consists of a good mixture of industry, agriculture, tourism and services.
