Murnau
A picturesque old town

Murnau am Staffelsee is a market town with 11,500 inhabitants and situated in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Werdenfelser Land, in the northern part of Bavaria’s region Oberbayern.

Murnau is located on the edge of the Bavarian Alps in the so-called pre alpine region, approx. 70 km south of Munich. Directly to its west is the Staffelsee Lake and to its east the Riegsee Lake which is around 700 m above NN and centred in the nature reserve Murnauer Moos.

In the picturesque old town with its house fronts being under preservation order, you can enjoy cafés and boutiques, Bavarian restaurants as well as comfortable bars like the Prosecceria and the “Brewery of Griesbräu in Murnau”. Murnau’s small alleys have over the years attracted many noteworthy artists, as for example Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky of the Blaue Reiter artistic collective. They lived here for 5 years, from 1909 to 1914. Who would like to see some of their famous paintings, should visit an exhibition dedicated to them in the castle museum or the Münter house in which they lived. A guided tour will take you to further important attractions.

Numerous cycling and hiking trails lead through countryside with lots of lakes from where you have a marvellous view of the peaks of the mountain ranges Wetterstein, Ester and Ammer.

Murnau is economically dominated by middle-class companies in the business of trade, tourism and gastronomy.
