Chiemgau and Lake Chiemsee, the Bavarian sea

Chiemgau is a region in Upper Bavaria that extends to the Alps. In the north gentle hills prevail scenery whilst in the south the mountains are dominating the countryside. In between are lots of forests and meadows. Inzell, Reit im Winkel and Ruhpolding are well known winter sports resorts of the region. The city of Traustein is centre of it. In the north lies the nature reserve Eggstätter Lakes which comprises of 17 small lakes. Waginger Lake that is located in the east of Chiemgau, is Upper Bavaria‘s warmest lake. 90 km southeast of Munich is situated Lake Chiemsee, which is the biggest Bavarian lake and has 75 km of shores. In Lake Chiemsee is an island called Herreninsel, on which King Ludwig II built the famous castle of Herrenchiemsee. On another island, called Fraueninsel, is the monastery of Frauenwörth.  (The picture shows the view of Frauenwörth)

The lakes offer many possibilities for bathing. Lake Chiemsee is particularly favoured for sailing sports because it is the stormiest lake in Bavaria. Even the tides on its shore can be measured.
