Hohenschwangau Castle
Hohenschwangau Castle
Maximilian II makes a dream come true

Very close to Neuschwanstein castle is located another castle. Hohenschwangau castle was built in the Middle Ages and already a ruin when Maximilian II of Bavaria, father to Ludwig II, discovered it in 1832 on a walk and decided to acquire it. Fascinated by the wonderful location, he built the castle in neo Gothic style within five years. It was used by the Bavarian royal family as summer and hunting residence.

Some of the originally furnished rooms are a real feast to your eyes. For example the orient room which Queen Marie, mother to King Ludwig II, used as bedroom. Maximilian II let design and decorate this room in oriental style in recollection of his orient trip. The Tasso room, the bedroom of the kings, has a specific feature built in the room’s ceiling: A starry sky which could be illuminated from the room on top of it. Below the castle lies the Schwansee Park which used to belong to the castle.
