Berchtesgaden is known for saltworks. In older times salt often became the cause of strife between Salzburg and Bavaria. The mighty archbishopric Salzburg had great influence in this region.

After the church‘s power decreased in 1803 the town belonged to different countries – it changed hands from the Austria to France and finally to Bavaria.
