Wertheim
Wertheim
The most northern town in Baden-Württemberg

Wertheim, a town some 70 kilometres far from Frankfurt and 30 kilometres from Würzburg, boasting of a castle ruin and a picturesque old town quarter, is set off beautifully by the hills of the Spessart forest and the outlet of the river Tauber into the river Main.

Known by many of the citizens in the surrounding regions due to the shopping outlet with the name of “Wertheim Village” situated nearby, the town of Wertheim is well worth a visit on its own, since not only the ruins of the castle of the former Counts of Wertheim on a hill above the estuary of river Tauber but also the picturesque lines of houses along the river and the old town quarter with its well-preserved half-timbered houses are worth seeing.

Amongst the most important historic buildings of the town the Protestant “Stiftskirche” with its steeple dominating the market place, the Glass Museum and the County Museum as well as the ruin of the castle above town are worth to be mentioned. Castle Wertheim was destroyed in large parts by a powder explosion during the Thirty Year Wars and left out of repair afterwards.

Visitors who like to learn about the region by strolling and hiking are presented with the opportunity to use the “Wine and Tauber Hiking Trail” (Wein-Tauber-Wanderweg) which leads around the town on 20 kilometres, connecting the former monastery of Bronnbach, the wine producing village of Reicholzheim and many points of cultural and historic interest which are explained using panels on the spot. This hiking trail follows the Main-Donau Hiking Trail in some parts.
