Ulm – Danube town

The Danube is in the city of Ulm still a young river; nevertheless it can be sailed excellently by daily tour boats. From the water you have a marvellous view of an extensive bank promenade, with roofs of historical buildings rising behind the city wall that was built in 1482 as bulwark against hostile armies. But also Neu-Ulm, the young and modern town comes into sight then.

Touristic centre of Ulm is the Ulm Minster which centres numerous buildings worth seeing. One of the nicest buildings of the city is the city hall. The historical fishermen and tanner's quarter was as lovingly restored as the ensemble 'Green Court', one of the oldest areas of settlement in Ulm. The quarter situated in the east of the Old Town takes you to past times, because nearly half of the buildings there were constructed before 1700.

TIP: Admire the Einstein's fountain which was built in honour to the city‘s most famous son. The cast bronze sculpture was created by Jürgen Goertz in 1984 on the historical arsenal and consists of three elements: the rocket body represents technology, atomic threat and conquering space. A large snail’s shell representing nature, wisdom and scepticism towards man controlling technology, sits on the rostrum. Einstein’s head with impish eyes and the tongue mockingly stuck out emerges from the snail’s shell.
