Castles, palaces as well as historical buildings in charming little towns

Mysterious rocks, enchanting meadows, dark forests, clear lakes and brooks – the Harz region is the perfect surrounding for myths and legends. There are lots of them in the Harz!

Old imperial legends, like those about Barbarossa, Heinrich the bird catcher or Heinrich IV are still told as are tales about supernatural things, since Harz region is centre of diabolical witchcraft. There is of course also the miner's world with a mighty mountain ghost, mysterious Venetians and ambivalent dwarfs.

Best known is Walpurgisnacht, the night of the witches. Every year at the last night of April witches meet on the Brocken, a mountain also called Blocksberg. This most important witches' sabbath expels winter and welcomes spring. Yearly highlight is the dance around a fire. Still today there are numerous celebrations on that day in the Harz to which many visitors are attracted.

Numerous castles, fortresses and palaces as well as historical buildings in charming little towns can also be explored. UNESCO has listed three of them as world heritage sites. These are the Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, the medieval town centre of Quedlinburg and the triumvirate consisting of the Rammelsberg Mining Museum, the old imperial town of Goslar and the Upper Harz Water Management System. There is much to be explored in the Harz!
