Southern Upper Rhine Valley
Baden-Württembergs Southwest has international flair

The region Southern Upper Rhine Valley has the French Alsace as its neighbour in the west and Switzerland in the south, and both neighbouring countries add an international flair to the region, as the influences of France and Suisse are felt economically, culturally and also concerning gastronomy traditions. The region Southern Upper Rhine Valley includes the urban district Freiburg im Breisgau as well as the rural districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Emmendingen and Ortenaukreis. About half of the total slightly more than 4,000 square kilometres consist of woods and forests, and the majority is used for agriculture. More than one million people live in the region.
