Eberhard Karl’s University is known in the fields of arts as well as of natural sciences.

In 1995 biologist Prof. Dr. Nüsslein-Volhard was awarded together with Eric F. Wieschaus and Edward B. Lewis with the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology for her research on genetic control of embryonic development.

The university comprises of following faculties: protestant theology, catholic theology, law, medicine, economics and social sciences, mathematics and natural sciences as well as philosophy. Additionally there is a centre of Islamic theology and further interfaculty institutes.

Among theologians it used to be custom to study at least one term in Tubingen. Also the Faculty of Medicine is well known since it gives its students an opportunity to study outside the range of the curriculum.

Winter term 2013/14 is kind of record breaking for the University of Tubingen: more than 29,000 students were enrolled, 58.4 percent being female.
