Wasungen
Wasungen
In the beautiful valley of river Werra

Wasungen is a provincial town between the Thuringian forest and river Rhön. It lies in the administrative district of Schmalkalden Meiningen in the middle Werra valley.

Landmark of Wasungen is the castle ruin of Maienluft which today accommodates a restaurant that offers an outstanding view both of the valley and river.

Around the town’s market square in the small Old Town, line up half-timbered houses, some of them dating back to as far as the 16th century. Here is also the 3 storey city hall that was built between 1532 and 1534. On the main street you will see the convent, built in 1576. Furthermore, you can even see some parts of the town wall, which originally dates back to the 14th century.

The district of Bonnsdorf is starting point of numerous hiking trails. On its village square is a small well, which invites hikers to refresh by drinking some of its clear and chilly water.

Events

Since 1524 carnival is celebrated in Wasungen. Each year people dance and enjoy on those crazy days under a different motto. Traditionally, on carnival Saturday a parade is staged and over 80 thematically decorated carriages slowly pass through the small town.
