Home of the "Thuringia Dumpling"

Meiningen is district principal town in the south of Thuringia. With over 200,000 inhabitants Meiningen is the biggest town in the administrative district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen. Approximately half of the city consists of forest area. The German low mountain ranges Rhön and Thuringian Forest are only a few kilometres far from town.

Henneberg House is the landmark of Meiningen. Built in 1894/1895 the half-timbered house is today listed under the act of conservation of monuments and historic buildings. It accommodates a very lovely restaurant with winter garden, beer garden and boarding house.

The Protestant city church „Unserer lieben Frauen“ dominates the market square. This ecclesiastical building forms the centre of the historical Old Town. Worth seeing are the altar, pulpit and stone Madonna.

In the city centre is also the English Garden which offers a total of 12 hectares rest and relaxation. In the park is a swan pond and ice pond, two small lakes linked to each other. Further, in the park are many bridges, wells and monuments.

Several bicycle trails will enchant those among you who indulge in bicycle tourism.

Events

There are some awesome events staged in Meiningen! Spring market, Easter market, May market, Autumn market and St. Martin's market attract annually lots of visitors.

However, the biggest event in the city is every year at the end of June or early July. The „City and Dumpling Festival“ which is devoted to the history of the Thuringian dumpling, a culinary speciality in Thuringia. After three days the festival ends with, of course, a dumpling feast.
