Martin Luther´s town

Eisenach lies in the west of Thuringia in midst of the Hörsel valley. The town has 42,000 inhabitants. Its landmark is probably known even outside Germany since it is listed as world cultural heritage: Castle of Wartburg. Once seat of the landgraves of Thuringia Martin Luther here translated the New Testament.

Eisenach is also birthplace to the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach. A museum is dedicated to his work and life.

In Eisenach‘s city centre you can visit other castles and buildings that are all very well preserved. There is for example the town castle Stadtschloss and the palace of Bechtolsheim. But there are even more castles in the districts of Eisenach. The city’s only catholic church, the Elisabethkirche, is worth visiting as well. Built of mussel lime the church is constructed following the Elisabethkirche in Marburg.

The Luther monument in Eisenach shows on four reliefs scenes out of Luther‘s life in Eisenach and on castle Wartburg. It stands at the oldest marketplace in Eisenach.
