Saalfeld
Saalfeld
The worlds most colourful grottos

Saalfeld lies in the southeast of the federal state of Thuringia. In the former Franciscan's monastery in the Old Town is today the Thuringian Homeland Museum. Right next door is the Minster which dates back to 1293. Worth seeing is also Castle Wetzelstein, a neoromanesque building that was built between 1878 and 1880.

A special attraction is the Easter Tree which yearly gets decorated with 10,000 Easter eggs.

Best known place of interest in the town is the „Fairy Grottos“ at the edge of the Thuringian woods. Once upon a time miners diminished alum slate here, but today the grottos, which are by the way the most colourful ones in the world, enchant visitors. Attached is an „Experience Museum“ where you can discover the secrets of mining, minerals, stalactites and stalagmites. In the „Fairy World“, the grotto park so to speak, very young visitors can meet real fairies and get excited by stories and adventurous games.
