Home of the Doppelkorn Schnapps

Nordhausen lies in the north of Thuringia at river Zorge and has a total of 14 bridges leading over the river. The town is principal town of the administrative district of Nordhausen.

Landmark of the town is Roland, a figure that reminds of the council’s fall in 1375. The original Roland made of wood is exhibited in the new city hall while the one standing in the city hall is only a copy. From here dominical tours through town start.

In the Old Town of Nordhausen you also find the cathedral Zum Heiligen Kreuz, the most interesting building in the town. From here you can start a walk along the still well preserved town wall. A short visit to the Blasii Church which was for the first time mentioned in records in 1234, is definitely worthwhile. This church was extensively renovated and re-opened in 2004.

Also well known is the town’s „Doppelkorn“, a double distilled grain schnapps which occasionally was made in 100 distilleries in this town. This old tradition still continues. At a city tour the technology of grain distilling is explained to visitors.

Among customs and traditions of the town, is also the custom that bride and groom plant a tree in the northern outskirts. A forest grew at this place of town which is today a favoured area for relaxing. For young animal lovers there is a zoo with a reptile house, a Petting Zoo and adventure playground. The petting zoo has many tame animals that can be fed. The Reptile's House accommodates on a total of 1000 square metres a huge number of snakes, spiders, lizards and frogs. Even crocodiles are held here.
