Nebel on Amrum
Nebel on Amrum
Windmill and Lighthouse

Nebel lies on the eastern coast of th North Sea island of Amrum in the administrative district of North Friesland in the federal state of Schleswig - Holstein.

Small fisher houses surrounded by colourful flower gardens form a village that has kept its original character. Comfortable cafés and restaurants tempt visitors to stay. In the centre of the village the ancient church St. Clemens was built in 1236. It has a skilfully formed cemetery whose gravestones dating back to seafarer's times are absolutely worth seeing.

The Lighthouse of Amrum was built in 1875 and is, of course, the island’s landmark. During summer months in the mornings it is open to tourists who enjoy the view of the island and sea.

The Windmill of Amrum was built in 1771 and today serves as a museum. The windmill’s four wings usually stand in diagonal position, but are turned when somebody dies. From decease to burial the wings stand in a horizontal vertical position. Directly opposite the mill is located the cemetery of homeless people. Anonymous persons who are washed ashore are buried here since 1905.

Hiking trails lead through the dunes to a wide and sandy beach at which you can swim at low tide and flood. You can also do a walk through the mud-flats of the intertidal zone.
