Husum
Maritime life and intertidal zone

Husum is the principal town of the administrative district of North Friesland in the federal state of Schleswig - Holstein. The town lies directly at the North Sea coast and in the national park Schleswig-Holstein’s Intertidal Zone.

Before reaching Husum’s Old Town, the first place of interest visitors pass is the Castle of Husum. Built in 1582, the castle is open to public. Its former kitchen today accommodates a café. You can get a piece of home-baked cake served on the terrace from where you can admire the blossom of around 5 million crocuses in spring. Don’t forget to take a walk though the beautiful castle garden afterwards.

In the city centre is the Tide Harbour in which historical ships can be seen. Moreover, worth seeing are the Navigation Museum as well as the North Sea Museum. The North Sea Museum informs about culture and tradition along the North Sea coast. Important facts about coastal defence and life on the Halligen are displayed in this museum, too.

A view of the Halligen and town you have from top of the water tower which was built in 1903. Back then it was used for the town’s water supply. Osterfeld Farmhouse is the oldest open-air museum in Germany. Here are vividly exhibited rural life and crafts of old times.

Swimming in the North Sea or being lazy on the beach - here you can do both. While one likes playing beach volleyball, others can rent a comfortable whicker beach chair or do a hike through the mud-flats.

Events

In February or March Husum‘s winter marathon takes place.

Horse lovers will enjoy the annual Schimmelreiter riding tournament (named after a famous German novel by Theodor Storm) at the weekend following Ascension Day.

In August Husum‘s Harbour Party with lots of music and sports events is staged.
