Büsum
Gate to Helgoland

Büsum is a village in the Dithmarschen district in Schleswig-Holstein. The small port village lies directly at the North Sea, which makes it prone to storm tides.

In Büsum is one of the biggest North Sea harbours of the federal state. From here goes a ferry to island Helgoland.

In the museum „Adventure World Blanker Hans“ much information about the history of the village is displayed. Unfortunately, storm tides are part of normal life at the North Sea and thus also in Büsum. The amount of tides has not lessened, but technology has improved. Today a better warning system exists and dykes protect the town, if they hold then.

In the Adventure World in Büsum visitors can see how such a storm tide evolves. In a storm tide rescue capsule you can experiences a storm tide on hand of multimedia simulations and special effects. No fear, everybody is saved! Furthermore, information is given on coastal defence, weather, tides and diking. A bistro called „Blanker Hans“ provides you with delicious dishes for your hungry stomach after having experienced a storm tide.

In the harbour of Büsum the distress cruiser „Theodor Storm“ is stationed. This ship belongs to the German Society and rescues shipwrecked persons. Besides yearly about 140,000 tonnes of goods are turned at this harbour. Also tour boats start from here.

Along the dyke new promenades and places have opened. At the new promenade you can now walk until the lighthouse. Keen swimmers will love the family lagoon which has a sandy beach and many playing opportunities for kids. There is plenty of space for digging and romping around!
