Luther’s city in the southeast of Saxony-Anhalt

Big reformer Martin Luther turned Wittenberg into a place of international fame. Today, the small town is an attractive destination for visitors from all around the world.

Places referring to Luther are all listed as UNESCO world cultural heritage. Amongst them are:

The affectionately restored home of Luther: located in the court of the in 1504 built former Augustinian monastery in Collegien Street, it today accommodates one of the worldwide biggest museums on history of the Reformation.

Castle church with its famous door: The castle church All Saints' Day is at the same time church of former Wittenberg University. Here the Augustinian monk and theology professor, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the door at 31st of October, 1517.

The slender church tower is 88 metres high and decorated with a banner formed of tessellated stones. On it is written: „A mighty fortress is our God“, taken out of one of Luther’s hymns.

Town church with the Cranach altar: Lucas Cranach the elder (born in 1472) is one of the most important German Renaissance painters. He painted skilfully the altarpiece in St. Marien, which was initiated in 1547. Its middle part displays the Communion.

Martin Luther High School: Interesting and modern is this former GDR building that has been designed by the artist Hunderwasser.

Numerous guided tours on different subjects take you through the town’s culinary and historical sides.

TIP: Taste a dish at the brewery Wittenberg which is in the historical city centre and also known as "Beyerhof". Wittenberg’s sole brewery serves its guests in two rooms of the three floor building. The best: you can watch the brewing process.

The national costume association offers a quite outstanding service. If you feel like dressing for a special occasion medievally, you can choose among approx. 1,000 pieces something that fits you. You can buy it or just lend it, whatever you wish.
