Charming small town at a river with a world-famous porcelain manufactory

Meissen is probably best known for excellent porcelain which is since centuries manufactured in Meissen. The „white gold“ was, what made the town rich. When looking up to Albrechtsburg castle, this richness becomes vivid.

Albrechtsburg castle and the cathedral of Meissen imposingly rise on Burgberg above the Old Town. The cathedral has an interesting history though. As early as in 968 a chapel was built by emperor Otto I. on the occasion of founding the diocese Meissen. During the 11th century it was altered to a 4 towered Romanesque basilica. Today the cathedral is sermon church to the state bishop of the Protestant-Lutheran church of Saxony. The cathedral is regarded as the most authentic German cathedral of Gothic architecture. It is richly and valuably equipped.

Beside the Old Town with pretty house facades and affectionately restored alleys, the city hall and different churches as well as the state porcelain manufactory Meissen are very interesting places to see too.
