Lovely old town with a nice historical marketplace

Homburg is a major county town with approx. 41,400 inhabitants. It is situated in the distrcit of Saarpfalz in the east of the federal state of Saarland. In terms of population it is the third biggest city in the federal state. In AD 1330 Homburg attained town rights. Highest peak in Homburg is the Einöder height with 382 m above NN.

Homburg is located at the foothills of the Pfälzer woods and has a lovely old town with a nice pedestrian area, historical marketplace, appealing cafés and restaurants with delicious dishes. The city park is a perfect oasis for a walk or to relax on a park bench.

Being the second oldest town in Saarland, Homburg looks back on nearly 2,000 years of history.  Situated below the ruins of castle Hohenburg, are the Schlossberg Caves, one of the favoured tourist attractions in Homburg. The Schlossberg Caves are Europe’s biggest man made red sandstone caves, in which mysterious tunels lead into impressive domed halls.

Spare time can be spent in and around Homburg in many different ways, for example in a climbing park or on canoe adventures on the river Blies. An extensive network of trails offers a perfect possiblity for long hiking and bycicling tours. The 13 kilometre long Schlossberg tour for example is a premium hiking trail that leads past idyllic ponds and marshlands.
