Mettlach
Mettlach
A very idyllic experience centre

Some towns combine contradictions… This is the case in Mettlach, the place situated very idyllically at the Saar River and on the other hand housing the company Villeroy & Boch of international fame und thus also being a very modern city. At the same time Mettlach is home of the “Saarschleife”, a place where river Saar meanders so much that it nearly forms an island, with wonderful panoramic vistas.

Favours of nature are coincidental, but man can contribute a lot to the attractiveness of its town. This is the case in the “Experience Centre Villeroy & Boch" as much as in the Old Abbey and the Museum Café. Dinner culture, production of ceramics and their use in kitchen and bath are the main topic in the “Experience Centre”. Visitors also get the chance to take a close look at the Old Abbey build in baroque style, since it harbours the centre. Friends of coffee house traditions will love the Museum Café decorated in the style of an old “milk shop” from Dresden.

If you should be curious about places to visit near town, you should first go and see the river horseshoe bend called “Saarschleife” which is best seen from the lookout point “Cloef”. It is also to be seen from the castle ruin “Montclair”, which was built in 1439 and is well-renovated now. Castle Montclair is only reached by walk or using a bicycle. You can recover from the access eating wonderful meals or just pastry in the “Tower chamber”. If you are interested in the world of medieval knights, you can marvel at the former life in the castle from April to October on each third Saturday – and without any fee!
