Pirmasens
Pirmasens
The former centre of shoe production in Germany

Pirmasens was built on seven hills and first mentioned in a document around AD 860. It is an independent town with approx. 41,000 inhabitants. Situated in the administrative district of Südwestpfalz in federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate it is bordering in the south the French Départements Moselle and Bas-Rhin.

In the midst of the town lies the architectural landmark of Pirmasens, the castle fountain. A nicely curved pair of stairs and a castle square which merges into the pedestrian street lead right into a vast pedestrian street perfect for a shopping tour including lots of different culinary delights. From the bull head at the fountain‘s upper end water is cascade-like pouring down to its lower end.

Built on seven hills...

Pirmasens offers a wide range of cultural and interesting attractions, as for example the Dynamikum, a science centre and museum of technology, the shoe museum and the parade ground with the new town hall. Worth seeing is also the Maginot line in Schoenenbourg at the nearby Alsace.

Wide meadows, fields and woodlands surround Pirmasens, making it ideal for hiking and cycling tours. New red sandstone rocks can be climbed and many castles and ruins explored.
