A former fortress

Germersheim is a city with approx. 20,000 inhabitants and situated in the administrative district of Germersheim in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The major county town is neighboured by the cities of Karlsruhe, Ludwigshafen and Speyer.

Germersheim is located on the left shore of the Rhine which naturally borders the federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The town was mentioned for the first time in records in AD 1090 and attained city rights in AD 1276.

Sights to see

Germersheim has a moving history. One of its stony witnesses, fortress Germersheim, can still today be partially visited. Particularly emphasis should be put to the unofficial landmark of the town, the Weißenburger gate, the Ludwig's gate with the town and fortress museum of Germersheim, the fortress park "Fronte Lamotte", the armoury with its German Street Museum as well as the Carnot wall and the detention house.

Being centred between the Pfälzer woods and the Oden forest, Germersheim is a perfect starting point for exploring the city’s surroundings or doing excursions to nature.

Major events

Regular events, as for example the „Germersheim Cultural Summer“open air festival or Germany’s biggest special bicycle fair „Spezi“ are some of the events that attract many visitors every year. Daimler AG is running here the worldwide biggest storehouse of the car industry.

County of Germersheim

The administrative district of Germersheim is home to 125,000 people and comprises of 31 municipalities. It is situated in the southeast of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Seat of administration is the city of Germersheim. In the east the river Rhine naturally borders the federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg. In the south the river Lauter marks the border of the county as well as the border to neighbouring France. The administrative district is completely located in the Rhine Valley and belongs to the German French association of "Eurodistrict Regio Pamina".
