Simmern
Small town with high recreational value

Not far from rivers Moselle, Rhine and Nahe lies the town of Simmern in midst a wonderful scenery. From here marvellous day trips can be done to the Hunsrück’s numerous valleys.

This provincial town has about 7,500 inhabitants and some nice places of interest which testify to an interesting history.

Church St. Stephan: A Protestant church in Late-Gothic style built at the beginning of the 16th century. The epitaphs belong to the most famous Renaissance examples between Mainz and Trier.

Catholic parish Church Saint Josef: The baroque Roman-Catholic church was built between 1749 and 1752. A 2-storey vestibule with main entrance and wide steps connects the church with a former Carmelite's monastery built in 1703/04.

Schinderhannes Tower: In the former powder magazine and prison room at the former town wall robber Johannes Bückler, nick-named Schinderhannes, was imprisoned. Today the exhibition „Reality and Myth of Schinderhannes“can be visited in the restored multi-storeyed tower. Original exhibits, partly from the robber’s personal possessions, are shown.

The new Castle of Simmern was built in 1708 as administrative building. It accommodates the Hunsrück museum, town library, registry office and wedding room as well as tourist information.
