Malchin
Situated amidst the woodlands of the Mecklenburg Switzerland

In Mecklenburg Switzerland‘s richly wooded countryside lies the city of Malchin. From here the region and all its castles and wonderful nature can be explored. Lake Malchin, canals Dahm and Peene as well as Lake Kummerow exemplify the region’s wealth in water.

Also the nature reserve of Mecklenburg Switzerland can easily be reached and explored from here.

In 1215 the village was mentioned for the first time in documents. From 1220 onwards the town was constructed along a grid-shaped road system. In the centre were market and church. Malchin received town rights in 1236. Remains of the city fortification are the Kalensche Pre-gate and the pre-gate of a stone gate, a high wall tower and a military tower.

Town church St. Maria and St. Johannes was built around 1397; however it was destroyed at the big town fire. Later on a three naved Gothic brick church was built as basilica.
