Amber everywhere...

Ribnitz-Damgarten is a provincial town in the administrative district of Western Pomerania Rügen. The town lies between Rostock and Salsund and has two districts which are separated by river Recknitz.

Numerous places in the town focus on historical amber craft. You can explore this unusual material in the amber museum and the show manufactory.

You can also go to the nearby beach at the Baltic Sea and look for the “gold of the sea”, as amber is also called. Stay until sunset, you won’t regret it!

Furthermore, the town offers a golf course, a water-ski facility and the thermal bath Bodden. Walking, hiking, bicycling and horse riding are as well favoured activities here.

The city centre was thoroughly redeveloped and Marien's church and the Rostock gate are now important attraction that shouldn’t be missed. At the market square you can see the amber well and city hall, the later one was built in 1834. The former Klarissen monastery accommodates today the German amber museum which houses Germany’s most important amber collection. Bridge Pass takes you over river Recknitz, formerly the border between Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania.

Both harbours of the town lie away only few minutes from the respective city centres. Here are berths for tourist boats and liners. Also fisher boats lie at anchor here, delivering fresh fish to surrounding harbour restaurants.

Sportive visitors are spoiled for choice. Hiking tours, bicycle trail tours, horse riding, golf, swimming and even surfing is possible in Ribnitz.

Interesting for both the young and old is the open-air museum of Klockenhagen. Here you can explore village life in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania as it once was during the last three centuries. Out of original buildings from 18 villages, a genuine and typical village was established. Even the gardens have been reconstructed according to original patterns. In the buildings itself are staged different exhibitions.
