Lüneburg
Lüneburg
Lüneburg, previously „town of the white gold“.

The hanseatic and university town Lüneburg lies at the edge of Lüneburg Heath and  at the rivulet Illmenau.

As member of the Hanse (since 1356) Lüneburg for a long time had a monopoly in salt trade in northern Germany. The old Salt Way was means of transportation to Lübeck. Demand in so-called “white gold” was high in that city and in Norway because of the production of salted herrings. Thus preserved they could be sold as a lenten food. Thanks to the herring sales the towns of Lüneburg and Bergen, but also Visby and Lübeck, turned into important and rich towns of the Hanse.

In and around this interesting town are many possibilities to spend attractive holidays.

Among them are for example:

The German Museum of Salt, the monastery of Lüne, the nature park of Lüneburg Heath, the theatre of Lüneburg and the thermal salt bath of Salztherme Lüneburg as well as the Sole Adventure Pool.
