Greetsiel has approx. 1,500 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality of Krummhörn. It is located in the administrative district of Aurich in the federal state of Lower Saxony. The town borders the national park of Lower Saxony’s mudflats and is the only port directly at Ley bay. The nature reserve Leyhörn lies in the west of Greetsiel and is part of the EU nature reserve Krummhörn.

Picturesque fishermen and artist village

This picturesque fishermen and artist village with its historical buildings is often used as scenery for movies. In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1388. Lots of small shops invite to a shopping tour while a variety of manifold restaurants and cafés tempt you to stay. Those who prefer some business around, should try to get hold of one of the popular beach chairs nearby the port .

Twin Mills

There are lots of attractions in Greetsiel. For example the twin mills, built in 1856 and 1921, which you can see even from far away. The Pilsumer lighthouse lies in app. 3 km distance and is one of the village’s best known landmarks. It gained popularity by the movie „Otto - Der Außerfriesische“ by Otto Waalkes.

Tourism, fishing and agriculture mainly contribute to the village’s economical wealth. De Beer crab trading for example has its headquarters in Greetsiel. With 27 crab fishing boats Greetsiel is one of the biggest fishing boat ports in Germany.
