Eppstein
Eppstein
Castle, stud work houses and a lovely Taunus valley

A mere 15 kilometres far from Frankfurt/Main, Eppstein is easily reached by way of the commuter train S 1, but though very near to the metropolis on the Main, Frankfurt´s bustling activity is easily to be forgotten in Eppstein. Responsible for this is not only the romantic and well worth seeing castle, but also the beautifully restored stud work houses and also the location in a Taunus valley, surrounded by green forests and hills. Eppstein Castle was first mentioned in an official document in the year 1122 AD as the castle of the “Lords of Eppstein”.

The town itself was documented in 1299 AD for the first time. At the end of the Middle Ages Eppstein came to Kurmainz, later on, after the Napoleon Wars, it became part of the Duchy of Nassau. After WW 2 Eppstein was incorporated into the Federal State of Hessen. The old quarter of the town is being dominated by the castle, but an even more impressing view of the town is to be had at the “Kaisertempel” (Imperator´s Temple) built in 1894. Along with the many picturesque stud work houses also the train station, a well-restored building in art nouveau-style now harbouring a café, is well worth seeing.
