Wicker
Wine village in a metropolitan region

In the relaxed and attractive wine village Wicker, called the „Door to the Rheingau“, you can experience all the contrasts of modern times in their purest form.

On the one hand you have the solid and comfortable half-timbered houses, vast vineyards, the historic watchtower “Flörsheimer Warte” and the wetlands of the creek Wickerbach with their orchards, all of them offering pheasants, conies and since some years now also storks and herons space to live.

On the other hand your gaze will not only glance at Wiesbaden and on sunny days all the way to the Rheingau and also Mainz, but also at a huge waste disposal site, and, in the Northeast, at the skyline of Frankfurt or at Frankfurt Airport which from time to time contributes the noise of landing and starting air planes.

Certainly there are quite a few more idyllic places in the Rheingau. But people loving good wine, and solid, but delicious home-made regional dishes and also the friendly and open-minded atmosphere in the seasonal pubs and restaurant called “Straußwirtschaften” will feel happy in this village belonging to the town Flörsheim. The license plates of many of the parked cars show that many visitors come from Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt and even places farer away to relax and have a good time in Wicker.

Most of all visitors love to take a stroll amidst the lush green of the vineyards and the meadows of the creek Wickerbach. Most of all in summer there are many places in which you will easily forget that it´s just half an hour to drive to Frankfurt, 20 minutes to Wiesbaden or 15 minutes to Mainz. This is another reason you shouldn´t miss visiting this village. Especially on the first weekend of August Wicker is a place you absolutely should visit – the annual wine festival attracts up to 10,000 guests per day in the old quarter filled with stands, booths and stages for live music. Most visitors also like to walk (about 1 km) to the medieval watchtower “Flörsheimer Warte” for a snack amidst the vineyards.

Wicker is one of the starting points of the Rheingau-Riesling Route and the Rheingau Riesling Trekking Trail. In Wicker Riesling and Pinot Noir grapes are cultivated. Several of the wines produced in Wicker have been given awards.
