Birth place of the author Heinrich von Kleist.

Frankfurt an der Oder is located Eastern Brandenburg, on the Oder River. The town is also called city of Kleist, because Heinrich von Kleist was born here in 1777. It is a town of great variety and animated spirit in which people live after the motto of Heinrich von Kleist: "A free, thinking person does not stop where he gets by chance; but if he remains, he does it for reasons and to chose betterment."

The City Hall and the 13th century church “Marienkirche” testify to the power, tradition and culture of the former commercial and hanseatic town testify. Several museums transport you into the past, for example, the Kleist Museum which has one of the best literature collections in Europe, or the Museum of Vidiana with its enormous cultural-historical exhibition.

Cultural events are offered in the Opera, the Theater, the Puppet Theater as well as thanks to numeraous orchestras, choirs and a music school. Composers like Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Gottfried Piefke have worked in Frankfurt (Oder) for many years. The Brandenburg state orchestra has its seat here.

A nice place for an excursion is Lake Helene. Situated amidst a mixed forest in the landscape conservation area of Oder-Spree-Lakes, it attracts visitors from near and far with clear water and a fine sandy beach.
