Isny
Inmidst a picturesque mountain scenery

The small town of Isny is idyllically situated in Allgäu amongst mountain scenery. Partially it is still surrounded by the old town wall whose gates can be seen from far away.

Beautiful half-timbered houses reflect the history of this town and create an unique atmosphere. The old pharmacy for example can be found in a patrician semidetached house that was built in the 16th century.  It has a cross burr vault and a six-sided bay window. The former monastery mill is another outstanding building. First mentioned in documents around 1200 it was in use till 1879.

The horse market was built in the 15th century and as —one of the oldest constructions of town— once accommodated preachers, butchers, tanners, cheese traders, pupils and doctors.

Also worth seeing is the former cloth house that was built in the 15th century. When linen weaving and trading was at its zenith, control of goods’ quality and amounts was done here at the Hall house. Since 1976 it accommodates the town library.

Defence towers through which one had to pass on the way to town are still standing. One is the water gate, a former prison. Other ones are Espantor, store tower Speicherturm, thief's tower Diebsturm, Blaserturm tower with bell room and clock floor, mill tower Mühlturm and harbour lid tower Hafendeckelturm.

Churches, a former monastery, a castle and the city hall make the late-medieval townscape sound. Interesting tours through this town can be taken Saturdays in the morning thanks to Isny Marketing.
