A fragrant attraction: Eau de Cologne

As the legend goes perfumer Johann Maria Farina created in 1709 a perfume which he named ‘Eau de Cologne’. Today visitors of the Farina headquarters in Cologne’s old town can visit the Fragrance Museum and find out about the history of Eau de Cologne. The famous fragrance of Cologne’s Glockengasse got its name 4711 nearly a century later when in 1794 the invading French numbered all houses.

The 4711 house, though not the original anymore, is nevertheless a tourist attraction. Not only is the exhibition room very interesting, but also the hourly chime playing the Marseillaise.

Until today, 4711 is produced from essences of bergamot, cedar, grapefruit, lemon, lime, tangerine and orange according to the original recipe.
