The Wuerttemberg State Museum

The Württemberg State Museum is not only one of the oldest state-run museums in Baden-Württemberg, it is also Baden-Württemberg's largest historico-cultural museum. Its collections have been on display since 1948 in Stuttgart's Old Palace, the former residence of the dukes of Württemberg.

The exhibition "LegendäreMeisterWerke. Kulturgeschichte(n) aus Württemberg" ("Legendary Masterpieces. Cultural (Hi)stories from Württemberg") has more than 1000 items on display, including the oldest known work of art created by man. The showpieces of the collections are objects which once belonged to the dukes and kings of Württemberg. They include the crown jewels and other treasures from the ducal "Kunstkammer", or Cabinet of Curiosities. Since May 2016 the permanent exhibition has been augmented by the show collection Wahre Schätze. Antike – Kelten – Kunstkammer (True Treasures – Celts – Cabinet of Curiosities). On an area of some 1000 square metres on the first arcaded floor, this presents some of the State Museum's showpieces: from its antiquities collection, from the Cabinet of Curiosities of the dukes of Württemberg, and from Early Celtic royal burial sites, such as the grave of the Celtic prince in Hochdorf.

The major state exhibition The Swabians. Between the Myth and the Brand explores exactly what, or who, is Swabian. Due to close on 23rd April 2017, it presents clichés and contradictions to do with Swabia. In the exhibition the Swabian image is traced back nearly 2000 years and the Swabian language is also examined, including the variants in its linguistic landscapes.

Founded in 1862 by King Wilhelm I as the "State Collection of National Art and Antiquities", the Museum of Decorative Arts was integrated into the Württemberg State Museum in the 1960s. This also includes the collection of historic musical instruments in the Stiftsfruchtkasten (Old Granary), the Museum of Popular Culture in Waldenbuch Castle and other subsidiary museums elsewhere in the state. October 2010 saw the opening of the children's museum “Junges Schloss” (“Young Palace”), where children between four and ten years of age can learn about local culture and history in a child-oriented way with alternating exhibitions.

In 2017 the knights are coming! Lay siege to a castle, win your spurs as a squire or feel what it's like to wear chain mail – at the major interactive exhibition "Knights. Life at the Castle", from 1st October 2017 to 8th April 2018, children aged four years and upwards and their families can immerse themselves in medieval times. On an area of over 1000 m² this hands-on exhibition focuses on life in a castle during the reign of the Staufer dynasty in the 12th and 13th centuries.
