Stuttgart’s Market Hall and Markets

Whether a farmer’s market or a flea market, Stuttgart delights visitors with its own special charm and invites them to take a stroll through the many traditional Stuttgart markets or its magnificent Market Hall, where you can take a journey around the world in just one hour.

Reputed to be one of Germany's finest market halls, Stuttgart's Market Hall was built in Jugendstil design in 1914. This impressive listed building with its decorative frescos is a veritable gourmet's paradise, full of epicurean delights and stylish, attractive household furnishings and garden equipment. On the ground floor, shopkeepers present their artistically and appetizingly displayed produce at a total of 43 stalls. The great variety of goods is guaranteed by the many different nationalities of the stallholders from Italy, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Turkey, France and Argentina, to name but a few. Apart from the international nature of the produce available, the popularity of Stuttgart's Market Hall is due in particular to the freshness of the goods on sale here. Three restaurants provide high-quality food and drink in the Market Hall: The “Fischhalle” (fish hall) offers daily fresh fish and seafood. The oyster bar is a special highlight. The "Desiree" Tapas Bar with Spanish delicacies on the ground floor, the Market Hall restaurant with Swabian specialities and the "Empore" restaurant on the gallery with tempting Italian cuisine. In 1993 Merz & Benzing added to the range on offer at Stuttgart's Market Hall. Originally located only on the ground floor and in the basement, the speciality store expanded its sales area in 1997 to take in the first floor, making a total of over 3000 m². Merz & Benzing's assortment comprises the best of beautiful, useful and decorative items for the garden and appealing, stylish objects for the home.

Each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays from 7 am – 1 pm and Saturdays from 7 am – 1.30 pm the traditional market is held on the Marketplace and Schiller Square. Here you can buy fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables from the region, as well as flowers and all kinds of homemade produce such as jams, honey, pickles and lots more besides.

Collectors are sure to find a bargain at the Stuttgart Flea Market, which is held on Karlsplatz (Karl Square) every Saturday. Stallholders sell kitsch, antiques and curios here from 8 am – 4 pm. On two Sundays a year from 11 am to 6 pm, once in spring and once in autumn, there is also a large flea market on Stuttgart's Marketplace, Schiller Square and Karl Square, as well as in Kirch-, Hirsch- and Dorotheenstraße.
