Stuttgart's traditional festival celebrates its 200th anniversary

Stuttgart looking forward to the year 2018, when the Stuttgart Beer Festival celebrates its bicentennial jubilee.

The Stuttgart Beer Festival was held for the first time in 1818. It was originally founded as the "Landwirtschaftliches Fest zu Kannstadt" – an agricultural show aimed at strengthening and reforming the region's farming industry, which had been severely affected by the eruption of the volcano Tambora in Indonesia. Today the festival has long since become a traditional event with international appeal. With the Historical Festival on Palace Square in 2018, Stuttgart is celebrating a double jubilee: 200 years of the Stuttgart Beer Festival, and the 100th Agricultural Show. From 26th September to 3rd October, in the heart of Baden-Württemberg's state capital, people will commemorate the festival's initiation by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and his consort, Queen Katharina.

The two tree-lined avenues on either side of Palace Square will be transformed into fairground promenades in the style of the 19th and 20th centuries. Entertainment will be provided by historical showmen such as jugglers, artists and quack doctors, as well as illusionists' booths and a flea circus. Visitors are invited to take a ride on traditional funfair attractions such as an old-fashioned Ferris wheel or a Music Express dating from the 1930s. The Jubilee Column in the middle of Palace Square will be decorated with agricultural produce in the style of the Fruit Column – the Beer Festival's traditional symbol. Recalling the Festival's founder, King Wilhelm I, the Jubilee Column was endowed to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his reign in 1841.

And in the festival marquee jubilee beer will be served, specially brewed for the occasion by Dinkelacker and Hofbräu, two of Stuttgart's breweries. The Agricultural Show will be commemorated with typical species of livestock and an exhibition of the most memorable items from Baden-Württemberg's agricultural past.

Tradition that unites: Gottlieb Daimler, inventor of the first fast-running, petrol-driven engine, installed one of these in a narrow-gauge streetcar and chose to launch it at the 1887 Festival. A similar streetcar is on display today at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The oldest original lorry in existence can also be seen there. At the 1897 festival, the Daimler Motor Company promoted its new motor truck, which Dinkelacker from then on adopted as a beer lorry. Such historical connections prove that even after nearly two centuries tradition is still very much alive in Stuttgart, and thus firmly established in its tourism offers. Apart from the Mercedes-Benz Museum, tribute is also paid to King Wilhelm I and his wife at the Royal Burial Chapel, where they are both interred. From the temple-like mausoleum on the hill known as Württemberg there's a wonderful view across the vineyards to the Beer Festival site in Bad Cannstatt.

In addition to the Historical Festival on Palace Square, the Stuttgart Beer Festival and the Agricultural Show will, of course, also take place as usual in 2018 on the Cannstatter Wasen fairground. Festivities will last for 17 days, from 28th September to 14th October. The Agricultural Show is held every four years, in this case from 29th September to 7th October 2018.
